YANGA, AZAM TO PLAY CHARITY MATCH TODAY

Vodacom Premier League giants Young Africans (Yanga) and Azam are expected to lock horns in a charity match organized by the Unity in Diversity Foundation (UDF) to be played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam today.

Speaking at the Tanzania Football Federation’s offices, Enock Bagaye, the co-ordinator of UDF, said yesterday the match has been organized to raise 30m/- required to pay for demurrage charges for three containers of bicycles donated from abroad for the needy in the country.

According to Bagaye, the total amount required was 121m/- but the government waived 90/- leaving the non-governmental organization facing a task of paying the remaining 30m/-.

Both teams promised to honour the charity match as their contributions to the society.

“My team will play and we see the match as an honour to the needy and the society in general,” said Azam team manager Patrick Kahemela during the press conference. “We have so many non-governmental organizations in the country but most of them always deal with HIV/AIDS issues. Now it is time we also look how we are going to assist those needing bicycles and wheelchairs as their means of transport.”

To honour the match, Yanga secretary general, Mwesiga Selasini, promised to field his best team, asking Yanga fans to come and cheer their players.

“My players are in good condition and we’ll field our first eleven in the match,” insisted Selasini.

Bagaye said the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Said Mecki Sadick, will be the guest of honour, accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Philipo Mulugo.

Entry fees for the charity match will be 1,000/- for blue and green stands, 3,000/- for orange stands, 10,000/- for VIP C and B, while a ticket for VIP A will cost 15,000/-.
